but for now we are young
let us lay in the sun

Oops somehow missed out on the release of Marnie Stern's new album, This Is It and I Am It and You Are It and So Is That and He Is It and She Is It and It Is It and That Is That. Yep, you read that right. (or not.) I wouldn't say I'm a big fan, but seems alot of ppl have never heard of her which is quite the abberation. The most (only?) original shredder in modern rock, her music is frenetic, playful, and ebullient, but with a fragile, vulnerable core which ultimately sets her apart from the Sleater Kinney wannabes. Her debut, In Advance of the Broken Arm, recalled the frank, unabashed sensibilities of Exile in Guyville (still the single greatest defining feminine guitar rock album, and I don't care who you are, what you think, or whatever Liz Phair is up to now), plus all the noise rock, experimentation and emo that indie hysteria has wrought this past decade. Her shrill vocals and frantic guitarwork take some getting used to, but they readily convey a choppy effervescence, as well as a beckoning, languid ease of music-making - apparently more evident on the new album. Pitchfork reviewer Mike Powell pretty much nails it: "...while energy is essential to her music, it's not the only force at work. It'd be a shame to see her subsist solely on hammer-ons. But learning to relax and record in a real studio-- as opposed to her bedroom-- hasn't compromised Stern's singular talent: to make the work of one sound like the joy of many."
